Stopping the Violence (STV) Counsellor Position

4 days/week (7hrs/day)

 

South Okanagan Victim Assistance Society (SOVAS) is a feminist non-profit organization based in Penticton BC, which provides counselling, support through the justice system, and information to individuals who have experienced violence or abuse. We offer a supportive environment that includes opportunities for professional development, peer debriefing, and clinical supervision.

 

Job Summary:

STV Counsellors provide mid-range counselling and related support to adult women who have experienced violence in their relationships, sexual assault, or childhood abuse. Counsellors also plan, implement and oversee the day to day activities of the program. Services are provided from a feminist and trauma-based perspective in accordance with the STV Counselling contract with the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General and SOVAS policies and procedures.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-to-one and group counselling for adult women survivors of childhood abuse, sexual assault and/or violence in relationships.
  • Maintain accurate up-to-date clinical records and statistics.
  • Work collaboratively to manage and develop the program.
  • Participate in collaborative decision making at an agency level.
  • Participate in creating community awareness of SOVAS, its services and issues related to violence in relationships.
  • Consult, network and liaise with community agencies and professionals to maintain up-to-date information on available resources, maintain positive community relations and build mutually beneficial partnerships.
  • Commit to on-going professional development and clinical consultation. 

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in counselling or related social service field is preferred.  An undergraduate degree and relevant counselling experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience providing counselling for women survivors of abuse from a trauma-based and feminist perspective.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritize and exercise creative problem solving.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated computer and administrative skills.
  • A commitment to ongoing self-care.
  • A second language is an asset.
  • Individuals with a First Nations or immigrant background are encouraged to apply.
